Q: Why MSU RFC?
A: Whether you are looking for a new sport or just a way to make some friends, MSU Rugby Football Club has a place for you. We strive to create an inclusive place for all to come and let loose after classes. We are one big family and are always accepting new players.
Q: Do I need any previous experience to join the team?
A: No, anyone can come out and try rugby. We welcome everyone, regardless of skill level, to the team.
Q: How do I join?
A: New players can show up to any practice, and or contact us to get any questions answered or additional information.
Q: What equipment is required?
A: All players planning to play in matches will need a pair of cleats (we recommend soccer if buying new, but lacrosse and football also work), a mouth guard (no part extending outside of the mouth), and black scrum shorts (Gilbert, Canterbury, Rhino & MSU Rugby).
Q: Are there dues?
A: There are club dues each semester, and they cover jerseys, practice facilities, coaches, transportation and hotels for away games, and some social events. Dues are assessed after each player's first game, and payment plans are available to disperse the cost throughout the semester. Each semester dues are around $175. There is also a yearly rugby insurance fee (~$30) that each player must pay before playing in any match.
Q: Rugby is a tough sport. How does the team make sure that everyone stays safe and minimizes injuries?
A: MSU Rugby FC takes safety very seriously, and we want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable playing the sport. We take the time with each player to teach them all aspects of rugby and how to play safely. This includes proper tackling and falling, scrums, rucks, and lineouts. Additionally, we work closely with the club sports athletic trainer to ensure that every player has baseline testing for concussions before their first game and is tested and fully recovered before returning to practice if an injury is sustained.
Q: What type of commitment is the team?
A: We welcome everyone to come and try rugby with no commitment. If you end up loving the sport (and we hope you do!), it is expected that you regularly attend practice throughout the week and games on Saturdays. Obviously, school comes first, so if there is a scheduling conflict, the team will work with you.
